an ode to logic

Logic is hot. To me, that is an irrefutable fact. I mean, whatever you may say attracts me in people, if I consider someone to lack a basic understanding of logic (even if I do! damn, I know I do... but I know it when I see it-- see, logic, to me, is like art, or else I'm a savant in denial), I will... quickly cease being attracted to that person. It's not just Spock (my One True Love at age 16). It's Sherlock Holmes (One True Love at age 10), Isaac Asimov (guy I decided to name a male child after at age 12 or 13), etc etc. Scientists get me hot in general. God, how pathetic. But true.
Anyway, here: logic articles on the internets are sexy, but logical refutations of said articles are sexier.
I do kind of want to seize the day, learn more logic/science and be my own hotass or whatever (and learning more math is on the to-do list next year... wish me luck). Still... I've made peace with the fact I'll never actually become a biophysicist, and truthfully I don't want to anymore. And I've mostly made peace with the fact that I'm sort of measuring guys' brains and deciding that physicists are... bigger, and I'd like, almost flirt with one... if I was the flirting type. Thank the gods I'm not, I guess. I'm sure physicists & mathematicians everywhere just breathed a sigh of relief. :> Also, my mom married a mathematician, and unfortunately, he's not actually hot. >____>;;;
....Blame the article for this rather disturbing post. >______>;;
You know what's *got* to be hot? A physicist writer & archeologist who's into like, searching for lost cities and is sarcastic all the time. Like some unholy mix of Spock, Indiana Jones and Andrew from Buffy. :D

Date: 2010-01-07 04:24 am (UTC)Oh look I am going to be fan-nerdy and subject you to a tangential comic-book-guy-type opinion:
I think canon!Holmes' strength is actually his imagination and breadth of knowledge rather than logic tho. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." That actually really only works when you can imagine a bunch of different possibilities so that the truth is there to remain. Oh snap! I sure told Doyle. Whatevs, the man believed in seances. Lucky for him that cool Dr Bell guy existed to base Holmes off of. Kinda like JKR, I think Doyle's a good observer and extrapolater of character, but idk if he actually *gets* what he made. blah blah blah unnecessary thoughts on Holmes dumped onto your LJ and only barely related to your post. ANYway. :DD
I agree that Spock is hot.
(Sorry I am too lazy to read the logic links.)
I remember in college the mathematician guys had the rep of being douches.

Date: 2010-01-07 05:53 am (UTC)I agree! I knew that about Doyle, and of course Holmes' strengths lay in intuition and imagination as much as deduction; if anything, the strength of his deduction rested on the strength(s) of his intuitive observation abilities; he developed schematics and 'rules' for what he observed and how to observe it and what it meant, but was also intuitively drawn to *see* the right things. His mind was a beautiful marriage of creativity and logic, which I think any true scientist possesses. And it's also a beautiful demonstration of an NT (ie, the Rational Intuitive) type in Myers-Briggs/Jungian typology sense. :> I guess I take imagination a bit for granted, though. ^^;; hahaha. *cough* Also it's not impressive to me in the same way 'cause it's not like I have any severe lack of it. ^^;;; Of course I'm impressed by people who *harness* their intuition/imagination to produce replicable results, however. :>
I think it's Holmes' demeanor and the mental/logical structure he gave his imagination that I find hot, really. That was my dream/awed vision-- to give my own dreams such structure, which is the quality I so admire in others. Especially hotass skinny British angular sarcastic others. :D

Date: 2010-01-07 06:39 am (UTC)I often hang out w/ some technically "genius" ppl, (and grew up w/ some v odd family friends) and really I'm mostly thinking things like "ok you make a zillion $$ at your computer job, yet you have still to buy a pair of pants that fit properly or understand that others do not love your ignoring the conversational flow to tell your own stories. *insert diff types of intelligence here... or, alternately, that I am shallow* :DD
I agree w/ you on Holmes. Cool pt that he was drawn to see the *right* things. (One thing I find interesting about, I guess, levels of smartness/genius is that it's often marked by ppl finding certain things very easy or natural or obvious...) I think one of the cool things Doyle did bring was the structure and process and technique.
lol I have no idea about the Myers-Briggs types. I admire structure, but it's very complicated and seems both too specific and vague for my brain to wrap around it! I wanna be a type with a cool name. "Dragon Lady" "Heart-eating Lion" "Special Unicorn" "Person made of Win" "The Magician" Something cool to make up for my boring sign and chinese year.
